There is a place on Guam called Puntan Dos Amantes, also known as, Two Lovers Point. It is a cliff that overlooks the ocean in Tumon. This landmark holds a story famous on Guam. A story of two lovers.
The story goes that back during the Spanish occupation lived a beautiful CHamorita (CHamoru girl). Her father who was a Spanish aristocrat and her mother was the daughter of a maga’låhi (CHamoru chief). One day her father betrothed her to a Spanish captain. She was very upset at this and ran away to a beach where she met and fell in love with a young Chamoru man. She came from a wealthy and proud family, he came from a modest one. It didn’t matter to them and they fell in love.
The girls father found out about the two lovers and became very upset. He demanded she marry the Spanish captain at once. The girl would not have it. She ran away with her lover. A chase began – her father and Spanish soldiers chased the couple all the way to a cliff high above Tumon Bay.
They were trapped between the edge of the cliff that looked out over the ocean and the army that was coming to separate them. They decided that their love would keep them together. They tied their long hair together to be one, embraced each other and jumped. The lovers were never seen again.
