December for the Catholic faith is a busy month on Guam.
Santa Marian Kamalen, or Our Lady of Camarin, is the patron saint of Guam. December 8th is the Feast of Immaculate Conception. Catholics on Guam have a fiesta (feast) in her honor. She is an icon to the Catholic locals.
They say the nobena (rosary). The prayers are led by a tech (prayer leader).
They also say the Nobenan Niñu in honor for the birth of Jesus Christ.
These are two of the prayers said during the nobena.
Si Yu’os un Gineggue’ – Hail Mary
Si Yu’os un gineggue’ Maria, bula hao gråsia, si Yu’os gaige giya hågu.
*Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.
Matuna hao entre todu i famalao’an, ya matuna i finañågu-mu as Jesus.
*Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

*Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death. Amen..
Tatan-måmi – Lord’s Prayer (Our Father)

Being part of these celebrations is how the culture embraces the value of Inafa’maolek.
